This secondary school is the oldest school in Braunschweig and has a long tradition. In 1415 with the permission of the Pope, the city council was allowed to create two Latin schools for the parish churches of St. Martin and St. Katherine. Under the direction of City Director Wilhelm Bode (1779-1854), the two schools were combined in 1828. The Martineum was located on Jakobstraße from 1415-1595 and until 1869 on the Goat Market (Ziegenmarkt). The Katharineum was located at the Church of St Katherine from 1415 - 1537 and in the Monastery of St. Paul (Pauliner-Kloster) from 1537-1700. From 1700-1856, it was located on the Hagen Market (Hagenmarkt). The school has had its present name since 1868. Three years later, the school moved to a new building on Breite Straße. In 1823, the final examination was introduced at the MK (the general abbreviation used for the school). In 1944, the school building was destroyed along with the valuable 20,000 volume school library during an air raid. The portal from 1592, which once adorned the Martineum on the Goat Market and now comprises the entrance to the assembly hall, can be admired from the street and the schoolyard.
