Originally a small church belonging to the old Brunswiek estate (later Altewiek) stood here. In a document from the year 1031, which reports its consecration in honor of St. Magnus, the name Braunschweig (Brunesguik) is mentioned for the first time. In 1252, a new construction of a parish church for the district of Altewiek in the form of a basilica was begun. It was then continued as a hall church. Renovation of the choir took place in 1447. After it was severely damaged during the Second World War, the church was rebuilt with the insertion of new building substance. The western construction and the choir house have been preserved.
