During the Middle Ages and in the early modern period, the Lion City was an important business and commerce centre which had been intensively trading with other Hanseatic cities since as early as the 13th century. The City of Braunschweig actively participated in the policies of the Hanseatic League and started sending representatives to Hanseatic Days in 1356. Membership of the Hanse came to an end when the city lost its independence in 1671 and the Braunschweig dukes took power.
The Hanseatic City of Braunschweig was history. The Altstadtrathaus (Old Town Hall), the Gewandhaus (Cloth Hall), the (reconstructed) Alte Waage (weighing station), the municipal parish churches and various town houses remain as stone testimonies to this era of the city's history. Dive into the past times on a tour through the city.
