Braunschweig University of Art (Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig)

Braunschweig University of Art was founded by the state of Lower Saxony in 1963. Today, it is among the largest institutions of its kind in Germany with about 1.000 students. The subjects taught range from classic fine arts such as painting, sculpture and graphic arts, to newer art forms such as photography, cinematic art and computer graphics. Practical instruction is supplemented by theoretical instruction in the subjects of art, design and media. Teacher-training courses are offered in the subjects of art education and handicrafts. It is also possible to study for a doctorate or postdoctoral lecturing qualifications at the Braunschweig University of Art. As the university is the artistic centre of Lower Saxony, its influence is felt far beyond the city’s boundaries. The university stimulates developments in contemporary art in the entire region and, hence, considers itself a place of exchange and dialogue. A variety of events including exhibitions in two galleries, discussions, lectures and films, are intended not only for students, but for the general public as well.
