The Bowers, which were also known as stone chambers, were build during the 13th century amidst the half-timbered houses typical of the medieval period in order to prevent fires from spreading. Examples of such houses can still be seen at Hagenbrücke 5 and at the marketplace of the Church of St. Martin (Martinikirche) the Jakob-Kemenate.
