In 1838 at this site the first German State Railroad began service between Braunschweig and Wolfenbüttel. The former terminus was an Ottmer building in the Gothic style. During the years 1843/45, it was rebuilt in the late Classicistic style. The structure was, for the most part, destroyed during bombing in 1944 and was replaced in 1960 with a through station. If the architecture report of 1846 is to be believed, the entire complex was a complete success: pink walls which still held up the gold-plated ornaments on the pilasters, tasteful paintings, a hall on the second floor with glass walls through which the station forecourt and the mountains of the Harz could be seen. The view of the platform was said to be even better: one could see the medieval city centre from the south and the mountain range of the foothills of the Harz from the north. Today, only the main building which housed the station restaurant remains. Presently, the Landessparkasse is housed here. Their predecessors, the Braunschweigische Staatsbank, purchased the entire grounds.
