The Hagen Market is the centre of the Hagen "district" which was founded by Duke Henry the Lion in 1160. The square is dominated by the parish church of Hagen, the Church of St. Katherine. Building was begun after the construction of the Church of St. Martin (Martinikirche) and according to the example of the cathedral (Dom) between 1200 and 1205. Originally, it was constructed as a completely vaulted pillared basilica. In the 13th century, it was remodeled into a hall church and equipped with large tracery windows.
