The Municipal Museum was founded in 1861 by the Initiative Braunschweiger Bürger (Action Group of the Citizens of Braunschweig). In 1906, it was relocated to a new building with Jugendstil detailing at Löwenwall which was erected by Master Builder Max Osterloh. During the mid 70's, the building was renovated and the display rooms and special events area were extended. The southern façade of the building dominates the adjoining Classicistic square of the Löwenwall.
The "Formsammlung Walter und Thomas Dexel, Braunschweig" (Form Collection) has been located in a villa located directly by the main house since 1983. The Old City Hall (Altstadtrathaus) (including the Dornse which is still presently used by the city on festive occasions), which is located at the Old City Market, has also been a part of the Municipal Museum since 1989.
The Municipal Museum is an important community museum of cultural history. It includes extensive collections of art and cultural history from Braunschweig. The newly renovated collection areas for Ethnology and Lacquerwork (Stobwasser) are especially impressive. Approx. 600 pieces of laquerwork from Braunschweig are on display in this exhibit (which has been on display in the Municipal Museum of Braunschweig since 1993). The most extensive public collection belonging to the museum and the largest private collection have been brought together here. This was made possible by the Richard Borek Stiftung which purchased the Richter Collection and made it available to the public through the museum for a period of ten years.
