The area which presently encompasses Riddagshausen was developed 900 years ago by Cistercian monks. The Monastery of Riddagshausen was founded in 1145. It included a monastic church, a farm estate and ponds which were created by the monks for fish farming which are now a nature reserve. The Riddagshausen Museum, located in the gatehouse of the former monastery, allows visitors to experience the history, trade, arts and culture of the Cistercian order.
