People and Pianos Steinway & Sons | Grotrian-Steinweg

The piano manufacturing companies Steinway & Sons (New York) and Grotrian-Steinweg (Braunschweig/Brunswick) are closely historically linked: Both enterprises owe their origin to Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg (1797–1871), who made his way from Seesen to the New World in the mid-19th century – where he achieved unmatched success with founding Steinway & Sons. His son Theodor (1825–1889) initially continued the European side of the business. In 1865, he sold the company to Wilhelm Grotrian (1843–1917) and two of his employees. Until today, Grotrian-Steinweg produce pianos in Braunschweig.

The exhibition leads through the history of the two enterprises – and thus through the lives of the piano manufacturing pioneers who unfolded an epochal significance in the history of music.
